When you have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, eating can be agony. Yawning can also feel like an act of torture, but you may not know what you can do for TMJ pain. This issue is often the result of overly tight jaw and neck muscles, which causes the jaw joint to move out of its normal alignment. If you’re suffering from this type of pain, here are three things you can do to treat TMJ pain and its underlying causes. 

1.   Eat a soft diet

As we already mentioned, chewing can be a movement that increases TMJ pain. For this reason, one thing you can do for TMJ pain is eat softer foods. Soft foods typically require less chewing, and this means you’ll feel less pain in your jaw when eating. Some soft foods you can include in your diet are: 

  • Applesauce
  • Smoothies
  • Protein shakes

You should also try to avoid hard foods like apples, and you may also want to stay away from foods that can only be eaten by opening your jaws wide, such as corn on the cob. 

2.   Use some relaxation techniques

Another thing you can do for TMJ pain is to use relaxation techniques. Daily stress and anxiety are common for many people, and these can cause muscle tension and lead to TMJ issues. Yoga is a relaxation technique that can help stretch out your muscles, and it can also help ease the stress and anxiety of your day. 

Deep breathing exercises can also help treat TMJ pain, and they can easily be done at work, at home and at almost any time throughout the day. By using such techniques to relax mentally, you can also help yourself relax physically and reduce TMJ pain. 

3.   Support your yawns

It hardly ever fails. When you see another person yawn, you can’t seem to help yawning yourself. However, yawning can be an action that increases TMJ pain. One thing you can do to decrease the TMJ pain caused by yawning is support your jaw. 

To do this, place your fist under your jaw when you feel a yawn coming on. As you yawn, use your fist to place light pressure against your jaw, and you’ll want to maintain this pressure until your mouth is fully closed again. This will help support the jaw joint during the yawn, which can make yawning less painful with TMJ issues.
