Two reasons why there is no cure for arthritis

Is There a Cure for Arthritis?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that almost 23% of the U.S. population suffers from some form of arthritis. This percentage means that more than 54 million people in this country have arthritis. With so many people affected by this condition, you might be wondering why there is currently no cure for arthritis.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is commonly defined as joint inflammation. Often, this inflammation is the result of age-related wear and tear on the joint, but it can also be caused by immune system problems or other medical issues. In fact, one source reports that the term “arthritis” is used to describe about 200 joint issues. These issues not only affect the joints; they also involve tissue that surround or move the joints.

What types of arthritis are common?

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Also called wear-and-tear arthritis, it involves the cartilage in your joints. Cartilage in the joints wears down as the body ages, and this causes increased friction and inflammation in the affected joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is also common. This condition occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissue lining the joints, and these attacks lead to joint inflammation. Unlike osteoarthritis, RA often affects all the joints in the body at the same time. Other common types of arthritis are gout and psoriatic arthritis.

Why isn’t there a cure for arthritis?

There are many factors that explain why there isn’t a cure for arthritis, and two of these factors are:

  1. Cause unknown — It’s very difficult to cure a medical issue if you don’t know the cause. Unfortunately, doctors are unsure what causes most forms of arthritis.
  1. Development process unknown — Medical conditions develop using a defined process. For instance, infections in the body develop using a set process, and doctors know what this process is. Doctors do not currently know the development process of arthritis. This makes it more difficult to find a cure that intervenes in arthritis development.
