MCL Sprain Physical Therapy

If you think you’ve sprained a ligament in your knee in Holland, Michigan, it’s possible that the sprained structure is the medial collateral ligament (MCL). This ligament is found on the inside of the knee, and it helps hold the thighbone and shinbone together in your knee. Physical therapy is an effective treatment option for an MCL sprain. There are two exercises a physical therapist in Holland will typically use to help treat this injury. 

1.   Passive knee extension

A sprained MCL can cause is decreased range of motion in your knee. To help improve the knee’s range of motion, MCL sprain physical therapy will often use special exercises. One example of an exercise a therapist can use to improve knee range of motion is the passive knee extension. 

This exercise can be done either sitting down or while lying on the ground, but the sitting version may be the easiest to do in the first few days after your injury. To start the passive knee extension, sit in a stable chair and use your hands to lift the injured leg onto a second chair placed in front of you. You should then relax your leg muscles, and this will allow gravity to straighten your knee joint. You may experience some discomfort during this part of the exercise, but you should stop immediately if it causes you pain. Try to hold the extended position for one to two minutes before bending your knee, and for the best results, you should try to complete the steps of this exercise at least three times throughout the day. 

2.   Heel slide

Another exercise that your MCL sprain physical therapy plan may include is the heel slide. This gentle exercise allows your physical therapist to help you strengthen the muscles around the knee, and it can also help improve the range of motion in the knee. 

Begin the heel slide by sitting on a yoga mat on the floor. If you don’t have a yoga mat, you can sit directly on the floor. Once you’re seated on the floor, straighten your legs out in front of you and place your hands on the floor behind you to support your torso. From this starting position, slowly bend your injured knee until your foot is flat on the floor. Then, slowly tighten the leg muscles as you move your heel backward toward you as far as you can before returning to the starting position. Repeat these steps until you’ve completed 10 to 15 repetitions, and then allow your knee to rest for a few minutes. Depending on how your knee feels after the break, you can then do another set of 15 heel slides, or you can wait until later in the day to do the second set.
