Two exercises can speed up car accident injury healing in Holland, MI

Car Accident Injury

The amount of time you’ll need to go to physical therapy after a car accident in Holland, Michigan, can vary. Injuries affect everyone differently, and there are many reasons for this. Some people have stronger muscles. Others have better flexibility and joint range of motion. These are just a few of the factors that can determine how long you need therapy. However, certain therapeutic exercises can help speed up healing in car accident injuries, and there are two that can be useful for neck or lower back injuries.

1.  Four-way neck stretch

Whiplash is one of the most common car accident injuries, and it can damage soft tissue in the neck, shoulders and upper back. Physical therapists can show you therapeutic exercises that can help your neck after a car accident. An exercise that many local therapists could recommend is the four-way neck stretch.

How to do the four-way neck stretch

  • Either stand or sit with good upper body posture. If you’re sitting, make sure the chair you’re using is stable, and sit at the edge of the chair to give yourself enough room to do the exercise.
  • Tip your head forward until you feel a stretch in the back of your neck.
  • Hold the stretch for 10 seconds.
  • Move your head back to the neutral position, and then allow it to tilt backward until you feel a stretch in the front of your neck.
  • Hold this stretch for 10 seconds.
  • Return to the neutral position again, and then tilt your head to the right until you feel a stretch in the left side of the neck.
  • Hold for 10 seconds.
  • Then, tilt your head to the left to stretch the right side of your neck, and hold this stretch for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat these steps until you’ve stretched each way three times.

2.  Knee to chest stretch

The lower back is another area of the body that’s commonly injured during motor vehicle accidents, but there are also therapeutic exercises to help treat such injuries. The knee to chest stretch is a lower back exercise that your local therapy specialist might prescribe.

How to do the knee to chest stretch

  • Lie on your back with your legs straight and toes pointed toward the ceiling.
  • Slowly bend your right knee up toward your chest until you feel a stretch in your lower back.
  • Hold the stretch for 15 to 20 seconds. You can clasp your hands around the back of your thigh if you need help supporting your leg.
  • Return the right leg to the starting position, and then repeat these steps with the left leg.
  • Continue to repeat the steps for this stretch until you’ve done it two or three times with each leg.
