Three things you should do if injured at work

What to Do If Injured at Work

According to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), about 2.8 million people had a work-related injury or illness in 2017. This means that you’re not alone if you have a work injury. However, you may not know what to do when you’ve been injured at work. Here are three steps you should take after sustaining a work injury:

1.   Let your supervisor know about your injury

One of the very first things you should do if you’re injured at work is to inform your supervisor. This is an important step to take for many reasons. For one thing, they can help you get any immediate medical attention you may need. They can also help you begin the internal company process for filing a workers’ compensation claim and other injury-related paperwork. Your supervisor should also be able to help you get in contact with the appropriate insurance representative. This way you can find out which doctors or facilities are covered by your insurance if you need additional medical attention.

2.   Take the time to rest

A work injury can be hard on a household because it may decrease its income. However, many workers make the mistake of going back to work too soon. One thing you should do if you’re injured at work is to make sure you’re taking the time to heal completely. Otherwise, you may be increasing your chances of reinjuring yourself.

A doctor or physical therapist can help you get an idea of how long you should stay out of work. These professionals may also be able to suggest helpful techniques designed to decrease your recovery time. To help ease the financial burden of work injuries, workers’ compensation may be available. This compensation can allow you to pay your bills while you take the time you need to heal.

3.   Get yourself into physical therapy

After your initial healing period, a third thing to do if you have a work injury is to get physical therapy. Physical therapists are trained to help patients treat workplace injuries. Some work injuries that can be treated using physical therapy are:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Back issues
  • Bone fractures

For these and other issues, physical therapists can build you a plan intended to provide you with many benefits. This may include reducing pain, decreasing recovery time and reducing the risk of future injuries.
