Physical therapy for ALS

The purpose of physical therapy for ALS is to help you adjust more fluidly to new physical limitations, maximize your existing ability and help prevent further pain and loss of motion.

Not all people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) experience the same symptoms or the same progression of the disease. A physical therapist can evaluate the individual’s joint range of motion, balance, strength, walking ability and stamina before providing guidance.

Our specialists will work with you to help manage any physical disabilities and provide guidance on improving function. The goal is to maintain safety with walking and independence for as long as possible. Appropriate exercises will be recommended for the purpose of maintaining flexibility and preventing further loss of motion as well as reducing physical pain. Exercise may be recommended in moderation and includes aerobic, stretching and range-of-motion exercises based on your current abilities. Your regimen may look completely different from another patient, but it will be the one perfectly crafted for your specific needs.

If you need assistance with walking due to the weakening of leg muscles and/or balance, there are a variety of assistive devices our specialists at Holland Physical Therapy can help you adjust to. Canes may be used to steady patients with mild balance issues or when one leg is weaker than the other. For more significant leg weakness, a walker may be recommended. Wheelchairs, braces and other devices may also be discussed to find the perfect solution for you or your loved one.

The purpose of physical therapy for ALS is to help you adjust more fluidly to new physical limitations, maximize your existing ability and help prevent further pain and loss of motion. Depending on the symptoms present, a physical therapist may coordinate with a speech therapist and occupational therapist to improve your quality of life and help you maintain independence.
