Four conditions that can lead to burning pain in the wrist

Burning Pain in Wrist

Think about how many times per day you turn a doorknob or lift your coffee cup to your mouth. It’s likely that you do these two normal daily activities many times each day without thinking about them. One thing that can make you aware of how often you perform such activities is a burning pain in your wrist.

You’re more likely to develop wrist pain than you might think. One study reports that about 6% of the general population experienced wrist pain in the past week. The study also reveals that 10% of athletes and workers with physically demanding jobs had wrist pain in the past week, too. A physical therapist can help you determine the issue that’s causing your wrist pain. They can also offer effective treatment for the burning pain in your wrist.

Four common conditions that cause burning pain in the wrist

There are many different conditions that can trigger a searing pain in your wrist. A few of the more common issues that physical therapists see include:

  1. Carpal tunnel syndrome — This condition occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is inflamed. Carpal tunnel syndrome often leads to pain and numbness in the wrist and hand.
  1. Osteoarthritis — Normal wear and tear in your wrist joint can lead to wrist osteoarthritis. Pain from arthritic wrist joints can radiate into your hands and forearms.
  1. Sprains or strains — A wrist sprain occurs when one of the ligaments in your wrist is overstretched or torn. Wrist strains are similar, but they involve forearm muscles and wrist tendons.
  1. Cubital tunnel syndrome — This condition occurs in the elbow. It involves the ulnar nerve being pinched as it travels through the cubital tunnel. Cubital tunnel syndrome can lead to pain in the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand.
